Amen to all of your points. Price is an issue; $300+ pushes the reader into the realm of serious electronic gadget. But, we don't want a computer: We already have a computer (or four), we want an electronic-format text reader. A generic format (like .pdf) is good. Nobody likes being locked into a specific provider (watch iPhones have a resurgance as soon as the ATT/Apple partnership ends *fingers crossed*). Netflix-style subscription would be good. Better yet, iTunes-style download over the internet. Plug in your reader to your computer and download a book. And we haven't even begun to discuss the library model!

This is really great, Melvyn! I became very interested in Drupal while working on my Wordpress project. I noticed a lot of debates about Wordpress vs. Drupal online, so it is great to see how Drupal works on a project like this. I really appreciate hearing about your process in such detail--I have learned a lot!

I mentioned in my post as well about the using Delicious as a tool to make subject guides. I think this especially for academic librarians who are subject specialist. In SJSU's King library website under research you can go to a page with a list of Databases that are tailored to your major or coursework area. Delicious links could be an an added feature to the site.

This is very interesting--thanks for sharing! It kind of makes me uneasy that there are these dedicated individuals guarding the knowledge that is supposed to be created by many. It is great that they are trying to preserve the editorial integrity of the article and in most cases they probably make it better, but still... I guess it is not much worse than reading a published article or book where the author and editor have complete control, but wikis come to us under the guise of a "community" creation. Makes me wonder how much "community" is really there in each article.

Great job in creating a very well developed wiki. I'm glad you didn't have any problems this time in installing your MediaWiki. I had a few problems with some of the steps because MACs automatically unzip their programs. Once that was recognized then everything was pretty much smooth sailing from there.

Yup, I should stop tinkering with the themes and plugins. I think all the installing and activating, and deactivating messed it up. One particular plugin is my chief suspect. But you are right, in a strange crazy way, I learned a lot about RSS and enjoyed doing this assignment.

Wow that was quite an experience you had. I think this is the second time that you mentioned having to uninstall and reinstall your wordpress from senna. With the short amount of time that you had to do this assignment I am sure that it was maddening. I'm glad that you were able to push through it though. It seems that you were able to really get a lot of experience (even with all the trouble) using RSS and you have a better understanding of it now.

klaws & Erwin Duran,

Thank you for your comments and good insights. In my case, my experience with blogs is reading lots of techie blogs. Some of them are maintained by individuals or groups of individuals who just have a passion about it and wants to share or connect with others, while some are company-sponsored blogs to foster a community among users of their products and services. These blogs helped me when I am on a bind for information, or deciding if a certain type of gadget or product, or services is worth it or useful for me. Funny, but I a now rely more from the opinions of lots of unsolicited, real user reviews than company-paid press release. :)

I also agree about the blog needing to have focus because any reader who comes to the blog specifically is expecting to gain information about a certain topic. So talking about your new knitting project in a techie magazine is not going to work unless you are making a mit for your mouse.

I like how you identified the types of users that blogs attract especially those who are collectors, enthusiasts, and hobbyists. Going back to the point that we made on focus I sometimes find in myself that if someone is writing well and has planned out theme about something I am equally passionate about, I will return often because that site gives me a type of mental stimulation in reading the blogs.

Unless you are a business I sometimes wonder how many people out there are actually trying to know their audience. I think there are some people out there who blog and just want to share/say anything or share/say something even though there is no known target audience. Some topics seem as obscure as most collectible items you find in an antique shop. Sometimes I think that the idea of share what you love no matter what it is or who sees it generates others to take interest too.

I think that you made really good points about successful blogging. Alot of it really depends on how dedicated a user is. Just as Farkas mentioned, having a focus is definitely important for a blog in order for it to go somewhere. Having an interest and some expertise on the topic also helps with that focus.

Just like you, I also mentioned participation by the blogger as being important to successful blogging. This may be something that is easier said than done, depending how dedicated one is. You can sometimes tell when you read a blog whether someone is writing content for the sake of posting something. I think the audience can pick up on whether someone is dedicated to a blog or not and will participate based on how much interaction they think will place.

I visited the academy recently and it was quite an experience. I really liked the tropical rain forest and the planetarium. It's definitely a great place to learn about the environment and some of the species that occupy it.

I was also nervous too about going through each step in the setup directions because I came across a few problems in which I thought I would ruin the blogs of everyone else. I liked you analogy about it being like diffusing a bomb. When going through the steps you felt like you could do no wrong with it because it was detailed. It was not something you could do without reading over first because there were side notes to consider.

I had the same problem with MYSQL config. It took me a while to realize that I could not use my mouse in order to get to the place that I wanted to type in. I wasted so much time on that it was maddening. I'm sorry that it took so much time for you to uninstall the Wordpress program. It's strange that you had to do it file by file. While trying to figure out themes I would install them and uninstall the folders with the files in them no problem. Maybe it has something to do with being a whole program. I envy the fact that you were able to change your banner. The first time that I saw your site I was curious as to how you did it and glad you described it in your post. This was actually the theme that I wanted but I really didn't like the banner and I don't have Photoshop anymore. Oh how I miss having Photoshop. Thanks for the advise on the plugin key.
My plugin didn't require it, but I may have to look for it in the future.

Great work on your blog.
